Mentoring Opportunities

By on September 18, 2017

Roaring Riptide welcomes mentors from all backgrounds and expertise!  Our team requires a myriad of talents to have a successful season.

The overall goal of our program is to educate young people about STEM and to empower students to overcome their potential lack of confidence by building a robot in a six-week time period that competes at several events and can be used for outreach events with the community to help inspire K-12 students about STEM opportunities.

The Roaring Riptide is open to all P. K. Yonge High School students who are interested. Students learn skills that will later prove useful in their lives such as fundraising, marketing, creating a business plan, strategic planning, promoting a cause, using power tools, and building a robot. Our students also learn to work individually and in teams, the importance of meeting deadlines, how to cooperatively compete, and gracious professionalism. The robotics team also builds character in students, helping them to mature into successful adults. The program instills the value of teamwork and commitment, similar to that of a workplace that relies on group work and reliability to achieve set goals. In addition, each team member chooses which aspect of the team to work on while being assisted by mentors, giving them a sense of accountability that reflects their overall input into the construction period of the robot.
